Statements

Every rule has an exception.
This statement is a rule.
Therefore the statement has an exception.
Therefore every rule does not have an exception.

Theorem: All numbers are equal.
Proof: Choose arbitrary a and b, and let t = a + b. Then

a + b = t
(a + b)(a - b) = t(a - b)
a^2 - b^2 = ta - tb
a^2 - ta = b^2 - tb
a^2 - ta + (t^2)/4 = b^2 - tb + (t^2)/4
(a - t/2)^2 = (b - t/2)^2
a - t/2 = b - t/2
a = b

So all numbers are the same, and math is pointless.

Modding is not a crime

From Make
NacJust because it doesn't exist doesn't mean you don't need it. If you computer case doesn't have enough lights on it to make you happy, then go ahead and put lights on it! (Or better yet build a case out of lights) If you don't have a peephole on your front door, go and grab a drill and make it happen. If your Tivo can't hold all of your favorite shows then add a hard drive and stop complaining. If your car doesn't have an armrest in the middle, then find one in the junkyard and modify it to fit your car. Link.

Free Software for Busy People

From BoingBoing:
Free Software for Busy People

Free Software for Busy People is a new book from Mohammad Al-Ubaydli, a Bahraini MD who is on a mission to help information-civilians understand why they should use free/open source software. The book tells the story of six people from six walks of life (government administrator, MD, corporate exec, entrepreneur, Arab teacher, primary school teacher) who adopt free software. The book simply and clearly states the case for adopting free software and provides equally clear and simple explanations of how to switch and what to expect when you get there.

You can buy a printed and bound copy of the book, download a PDF, or read it as a hyperlinked html file.

The birds of modern time

http://www.eians.com writes:
Birds imitate mobile phone ring tones

Moessingen (Germany), July 18 (DPA) Birds have learnt to imitate the ring tones of the omnipresent mobile phones, say German ornithologists.
"The birds have an uncanny ability to mimic these ring tones. This has picked up in tandem with the boom in mobile phone ownership," Richard Schneider of the NABU bird conservation centre near the university city of Tuebingen here said.
Jackdaws, starlings and jays were the best mimics, Schneider said adding that even practiced birdwatchers were being fooled by the birds.
One reason for the phenomenon was that these birds were increasingly common in the urban environment, even the relatively shy jay, he said. "There is food and an increasing amount of green space in modern cities."
The birds were simply adapting to their environment in imitating human sounds in what he termed an "evolutionary playground".
Many of the more common ring tones are themselves imitations of bird calls, so the birds are in some instances mimicking another species.
"Many birds call not only to find mates or to mark out their territory, but sometimes also to fool other animals," Schneider said. However, they never lose the ability to make the calls typical of their species, he added.
Mobile phone users who have ring tones from pop music will, however, not find themselves reaching for their phones in error when a bird calls. The birds cannot imitate these complex melodies, only the simpler ring tones.

DIY wind speed meter

From Make: blog
S D10954The cycle computer sensor is mounted on the circumference of a freely spinning plate (in my case a peanut butter jar lid screwed to a sliding door castor) which is surrounded by three rounded cups (baby food cups, NZ$4 the set) and mounted on a pole (an aluminium towel rail). All parts are either naturally weather-resistant (e.g. plastic or aluminium) or made so (e.g. varnished the wood, used silicone sealant to prevent water getting in). The unit was assembled and then calibrated out the window of a moving car. Link.

.mp3 is ten years

From /.
Sachin Garg writes "The Data Compression News Blog reports that on July 14th 2005, the name "MP3" celebrates its tenth anniversary. On this day back in 1995, the researchers at Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS decided to use ".mp3" as the file name extension for their new audio coding technology. Development on this technology started in 1987, in 1992 it was considered far ahead of its times, then MP3 became the generally accepted acronym for the ISO standard IS 11172-3 "MPEG Audio Layer 3" and no other coding method so far (2005) could uncrown MP3 as the popular standard for digital music on the computer and on the Internet."

Taser Tag

From We-Make-Money-Not-Art:

The Taser Tag is a project that explores the darker side of human nature and social progress through the familiar medium of game play.

The rules are simple. Once players get within about 10 meters (30 feet) of each other, they can shock other players by pressing buttons located in their headband. Those around them get a jolt of between 80 and 120 volts, depending on their distance. Or if you really want to hurt your opponent/friend, Taser Tag delivers an electric shock to his head the closer you get. But you get shocked, too.

twooppone.jpg ataserta.jpg

"The working hypothesis is people will forgo their own safety to inflict pain upon others, and from what I've found out, from experience, it turns out to be true," says Randy Sarafan. "People will continue to risk their own safety to continue hurting other people, and that's pretty scary."

In a civilized society, civilized individuals would not engage in "primitive," violent, behavior. As such, it would make little sense that anyone would want to play, let alone, invent a game such as Taser Tag. Fortunately, we do not live in a so-called civilized society.

Check the movie.

New internet

From /.
"David Clark, who led the development of the internet in the 1970s, is working with the National Science Foundation on a plan for a whole new infrastructure to replace today's global network. The NSF aims to put out a request for proposals in the fall for plans and designs that could lead to what Clark called a 'clean slate' internet architecture. Those designs, Clark said, could be tested on the National LambdaRail, the nationwide optical network that researchers are using to experiment with new networking technologies and applications."
